The 2026 Haiku-A-Day Challenge begins February 1st and runs through the full month to celebrate National Haiku Writing Month.
Wendi S. Harrington, White Fields Press, and the PWE Writing Community claim no affiliation with the official website for National Haiku Writing Month. In 2011, February became known as National Haiku Writing Month dedicating the shortest month of the year to the shortest poetical work. Michael Dylan Welch began the website www.NaHaiWriMo.com and started a Facebook page to engage other writers of the craft. NaHaiWriMo has grown in popularity over the years, ultimately becoming an international/ year-round platform.
Author Wendi S. Harrington stumbled across NaHaiWriMo in 2023, and eagerly began to look forward to writing a haiku each day, falling back on the teaching she remembered from school for the 5-7-5 syllable format. Later, she discovered that (1) there was a daily prompt given on the NaHaiWriMo website and Facebook page that encompassed a given theme for the month, and (2) there was a whole essay on how the 5-7-5 syllable format does not encompass the true essence of the craft of writing haiku. You can read that essay here: https://www.nahaiwrimo.com/why-no-5-7-5
White Fields Press will consider inclusion of haiku (even those that utilize the Americanized 5-7-5 syllable format) in the annual Celebrate Poetry! compilation that are submitted to the PWE Writing Community whether or not they were written as part of the NaHaiWriMo daily challenge.
We encourage you to check out the official website and consider participating in NaHaiWriMo yourself.
